Trek To The Roof of Africa: Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro Itinerary

Thursday 21 October 2021 - The Adventure Begins

International flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Friday 22 October 2021 - Arusha
We’ll meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport where we’ll have transport waiting to take you to a local hotel. The rest of the day will be yours to do what you want with, but we highly recommend resting today as you’ve got a tough week ahead! There will be a short briefing before you get your head down for the night.

Saturday 23 October 2021 - Machame Gate to Machame Camp (3100m)
We start the day with a short drive to Machame Gate (1500m). After signing in we’ll check our kit, take a couple of group photos and set off. Initially we walk through the forest with a chance of seeing Colobus monkeys and beautiful flora and fauna. It’s a slow trek through the forest until we reach Machame Camp. We’ll be camping overnight.

Sunday 24 October 2021 - Machame Camp to Shira Caves (3840m)
We are on the edge of the forest and Moorland. We trek up and over a ridge through the beautiful landscape and views of Mount Meru and our aim Kibo, quite a steep climb today but slow going. We enter the heathland area. Our camp tonight is by Shira Caves, which is situated in the wide open.

Monday 25 October 2021 - Shira Caves to Barranco Camp (3900m)
We leave the heathland on our ascent to the Lava Tower at 4,550m. We’ll be taking it slow as we climb along a ridge and towards the Arrow Glacier junction where we will have lunch. We then head to Lava tower where we will stay for a while to help our bodies acclimatise. The scenery dramatically changes as we head into the Barranco Valley where we are met by huge senecio plants. We drop back down to 3900m to make camp for the night.

Tuesday 26 October 2021  - Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (3900m)
We are up early and first to leave camp. Being out so early and first on the wall is chilly but amazing. The views are excellent and we even get to ‘Kiss’ the wall. On top after a couple of hours we are greeted with a wonderful view of Mt Meru and Kibo for yet another group photo. From here we head down into the Karanga Valley which is very undulating. A big push up into camp for the night where we have time to relax before our big push tomorrow.

Wednesday 27 October 2021 - Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4600m)
We leave Karanga for a long, fairly steep walk up to the ridge of Karanga in desert terrain, eventually arriving to meet the valley between us and Barafu Camp. This is a relatively easy day compared to others but mentally we prepare for summit day!

Thursday 28 October 2021 - Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5895m) to Millennium Camp (3000m)
Today is why we are here! We start at midnight only after a few hours rest. We follow head torches up the solid scree towards Stella Point (5750m). As the sunrises several hours later we feel the heat and joy knowing we are nearly there! We have entered Arctic terrain. We reach Stella Point and head towards Uhuru summit, the roof of Africa! We need to take it slow today as Altitude can affect anyone- the important thing for us is that we ALL make it to the summit! After reaching the top, celebrating and taking photos we descend back to Barafu camp for a well earned but short rest. After lunch we descend (watch those knees) to Millennium camp for a well earned bottle of coke.

Friday 29 October 2021 - Millennium Camp to Hotel
We start with a tipping ceremony for the porters (by now I can assure you they have earned it) then our final day trek through heathland, moorland and the forest ending at Mweka Gate. We sign out, celebrate and have lunch! We then head back to the hotel/lodge where a hot shower and a cold beer await! It’s now party time!!

Saturday 30 October 2021 - Free Day
Today we chill and take on lots of caffeine after the night before, reflect on our achievement and swap stories/show scars from our adventure. We’ll then be taken back to the airport where the choice of going home or staying on for safari is all yours!

Sunday 31 October 2021 - Arrival Home
Arrive home to tell your friends and family about your amazing adventures.
